Chambers, the American Humanist Association’s second president, was a strong advocate for feminist activism in the organization in the 1970s. She was also the mastermind behind the AHA’s 1977 Statement Affirming Evolution as a Principle of Science that was meant to counteract the efforts of fundamentalists to include creationist teachings in the schools.
