Council for Democratic and Secular Humanism (CODESH)

Founded in 1980 by Paul Kurtz, the group was a response to the rising influence of Christian evangelicals in American culture and a fear that fundamentalist religion worldwide was threatening democracy and freedom of thought. The group took a more aggressive approach than the American Humanist Association. It publishes the magazine Free Inquiry. The name is now Council for Secular Humanism. (See Center for InquiryW.)
